The rationale was that they would be easier to transport and store than a single 6ft by 4ft board). It also allowed for some modularity if required.<br /><br />I also purchased a 8' x 4' sheet of 2" polystyrene so that I could build the levels of the board in a lightweight way. My thinking was that a 2" level change best replicated what was required for 25/28mm figures.<br /><br />My next step was to set everything up on a table and see how it looked.</span><br /><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP5EyuXsthMQhhWFUCD9xiPwNnE0MB5Jw_2FmeatQ0w2myD8yb5HWNTC0DgMUhcEHcaTzMu05Us9TcBOUQxXOaohi-eu_vPlmfa8XZfzza0XGlLMnTd5w_0KULbqRVzH7cIuwHkD1liHX-1g-wA0x1olud7Id6gwbA9Soh40SRRDu2k1NhWrG5bIiE/s2048/M6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP5EyuXsthMQhhWFUCD9xiPwNnE0MB5Jw_2FmeatQ0w2myD8yb5HWNTC0DgMUhcEHcaTzMu05Us9TcBOUQxXOaohi-eu_vPlmfa8XZfzza0XGlLMnTd5w_0KULbqRVzH7cIuwHkD1liHX-1g-wA0x1olud7Id6gwbA9Soh40SRRDu2k1NhWrG5bIiE/w400-h300/M6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I got out my store of printed and purchased (mostly Tabletop World) buildings and set them out in an approximation of what I wanted to achieve. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span><a name='more'></a></span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjI4aaUGBIzpi9Sh7M6weBKyNdK6LDQC2Fvxic-u5Aw2juLmbLmZwnrsJ8afvSP0A3RRzW4pL41QeBHvFfsZGJFwfiqz1vHosXjZCd1XIGctpnpBvlWWGQCt_FY00FivjsPrzymDQPc3y1XAR67ag2vUIITOlWdtXAFXLGhaATGgoQrXYV-EcZOgz0/s2048/M5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjI4aaUGBIzpi9Sh7M6weBKyNdK6LDQC2Fvxic-u5Aw2juLmbLmZwnrsJ8afvSP0A3RRzW4pL41QeBHvFfsZGJFwfiqz1vHosXjZCd1XIGctpnpBvlWWGQCt_FY00FivjsPrzymDQPc3y1XAR67ag2vUIITOlWdtXAFXLGhaATGgoQrXYV-EcZOgz0/w400-h300/M5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This let me determine where I would have open spaces and where I would require levels. My research indicated that distribution seemed restricted to the UK/EU. Eventually I was able to track it down to a store in Portsmouth, Hampshire in England and made an online order. <br /><br />The URL for the store is <a href="http://UKWallpaper.co.uk">UKWallpaper.co.uk</a><br /><br />At the time the wallpaper was GBP18.99 per roll. A couple of hours later I received an email from a salesperson indicating postage to NZ may be higher than I had been quoted. The eventual cost was GBP45.00 for postage which blew out the cost.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">My "expensive" roll of wallpaper arrived in about 10 days.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The key thing is that a little goes a long way. I reckon I still have 1/2 to 2/3rds of a roll left after doing the 6' x 4' board you see in the top picture. There is enough for all number of add-on boards so the eventual GBP64 cost doesn't seem so expensive.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">A funny aside. When I posted pics on the Mordheim Facebook group there was incredible interest in where I had sourced the paper. I like to think that when Greg at UK Wallpapers arrived at work after a relaxing weekend, he was inundated with enquiries from around the world looking to buy single rolls of wallpaper and have them sent internationally. If so, it would be a real WTF moment.</span><br /><p><br /></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-58801715502859462572022-09-28T13:18:00.005+13:002022-09-29T14:26:12.123+13:00Mordheim - Enter the Print Farm<p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">One of the things you learn with a project like this is that good things take time. You can see a wonderful plan - Lybbanns Miniatures Youtube - then you can see all sorts of fantastic terrain pieces to print, access the stls (please support creators) but being ready to build doesn't happen overnight.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The printing of all the steps, walls, roads, ruins, buildings etc takes an enormous amount of time. Like a real long time. I purchased my printer in mid-July and I have been printing non-stop since then. By calculation, the printer has been utilised 80% of the intervening time since of switched it on. That is 19-20 hours per day for 70+ days. This is something worth thinking about when you plan your project. While the printing has taken 13+ kgs of PLA, it is the time to print that is your real constraint. When I built my 40k board purchasing GW kits was expensive but they were available in 1-2 days.<br /><br />So get used to running a printing pipeline! This is the reason I am so please with my Creality machine. It has been a joy with little to no downtime. The issues I've had were related to filament replacement (solved by Youtube search), bed adhesion (solved by adding brim/raft where necessary/keeping the bed clean/using hairspray for very tall prints). Youtube, Google and the Creality CR-6 Facebook Group solved all my issues - fast and effectively. No real downtime...production keeps running.<br /><br />Here is a list of some of the STL File creators that I have used. Again Lybbans did a lot of the work but there are a few I found myself:<br /><br /> </span><a class="yt-simple-endpoint style-scope yt-formatted-string" dir="auto" href="https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbVUwYXZTQkZGTVN5aVJqem9NVFN2MGR4OVdTZ3xBQ3Jtc0trcXlGNXFjNXl1Z1V5b3hmTEI3MmY3U1pnd0IyLUpXWlp3V0Q3QUxLWDZDbWlMcUZ2dXVMamNmRXZzc3JVMG81MWg5MlczSk1lWjJJS0FLaDZhWkV3NjNxQUdqYWNscUNqUldBTldjaHhiQllQQ2JTRQ&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.infinitedimensions.ca%2F&v=pR3TZyU58sk" rel="nofollow" spellcheck="false" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; cursor: pointer; display: var(--yt-endpoint-display,inline-block); font-family: Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; overflow-wrap: var(--yt-endpoint-word-wrap,none); text-decoration: var(--yt-endpoint-text-decoration,none); white-space: pre-wrap; word-break: var(--yt-endpoint-word-break,none);" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">https://www.infinitedimensions.ca/</span></a> - <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Wightwood Abbey - walls, ruins, buildings</span></p><span style="font-size: medium;"><a class="yt-simple-endpoint style-scope yt-formatted-string" dir="auto" href="https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqazBwejJMUjJrZ01pWFpwZUZmVHUzWEQ3djE1Z3xBQ3Jtc0ttbU5mS0Z1alRWbnRBNEVtcE5VVHVYY3VDWXRVa0UwRGhhSlpmYnlQZ3dDYUdJb1dLQ1V2VlRDcWtvWl94RnVDelBCZFpqZDRWQU1rYU5RbmE0eHgtSHJnZW5NQ1p5cjdYU2FkVWxXNFhhQ19ZdTdEaw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.printablescenery.com%2F&v=pR3TZyU58sk" rel="nofollow" spellcheck="false" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; cursor: pointer; display: var(--yt-endpoint-display,inline-block); font-family: Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; overflow-wrap: var(--yt-endpoint-word-wrap,none); text-decoration: var(--yt-endpoint-text-regular-decoration,none); white-space: pre-wrap; word-break: var(--yt-endpoint-word-break,none);" target="_blank">https://www.printablescenery.com/</a> - <span style="font-family: arial;">Medieval scenery, ships, buildings</span></span><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><span class="style-scope yt-formatted-string" dir="auto" style="background: rgb(249, 249, 249); border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">My inspiration for building a Mordheim city board was the video by Fredrik Lybeck of Lybbans Miniatures. Here is that video.<br /><br /><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pR3TZyU58sk" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">What was great from my point of view was that Fredrik had largely done all the planning for me. I shamelessly stole his concept, structural plan, materials etc. He also had provided links to the various items he had printed.<br /><br />This really short-circuited the whole process for me. Armed with all his planning work, I acquired the necessary stls and fired up my one-machine print farm.<br /><br />In the previous post I indicated that my new 3D FDM printer, a Creality CR-6 SE, had proved to be a "unicorn". What did I mean by that? Well from Day One I started printing successfully and have suffered virtually no failed prints or problems.<br /><br />3D printing can be its own hobby and.....well, I didn't want another hobby....just a source of terrain pieces. I had previously had a Wanhao i-3 (purchased in 2016) and while it had served me okay for two years, it was a hobby in itself and eventually the effort to produce terrain outweighed its utility.<br /><br />Not so with the Creality. The key feature for me is its auto bed-levelling. With the wanhao I was constantly struggling with the levelling of the print bed, manually adjusting corners, sliding in sheets of paper to measure the gap between bed and extruder etc. The Creality did all this for me and it really has been plug in and print.....exactly the type of 3D hobby I want.<br /><br />I've have sourced PLA from a local supplier and started printing. Two and a half months and 13kgs of PLA later I've the necessary skeleton for my board.</span><p></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-23921245080704527092022-09-27T16:18:00.001+13:002022-09-27T16:18:40.177+13:00Phoenix Rises - Mordheim<p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"> After six months off the blog, the phoenix has risen again (or perhaps something stirs in the crypt)!<br /><br />In March I went to Adepticon. It was a real refresh for me. After 2+ years of being locked down in New Zealand, it was a chance to get out and see the real world - outside our hermit kingdom. <br /><br />I had become very disenchanted with the bloat of 40k, the constant release of supplements, additional rules etc. all in a game that due to its underlying scoring structure was increasingly "same-y". Most of the content creators that I was following had turned into full-time shills for GW, pushing whatever was that week's release.<br /><br />Adepticon changed a lot for me. Firstly, I got to go to the biggest tabletop miniatures convention in the world for the first time since 2019. There was a chance to mix with enthused hobbyists, visit vendor halls, eat burgers and drink margaritas. I didn't realise how much I had missed it! Secondly, I attended hobby classes again. Over the 4 days of the event I packed in 24 hours of classes - mostly airbrushing - but also some specific brush work classes on skin and faces. Thirdly, I got to see Golden Daemon. It was absolutely phenomenal and I was blown away by how talented people were.<br /><br />When I arrived back in New Zealand late April I was enthused to get into the hobby again. What I needed was a project.<br /><br />Over the previous 12 months I had been selling off my 22+ tables of 40k terrain. I had built up my own stock of terrain, mats and boards and post the 2021 Fields of Blood NZ Grand Tournament I no longer needed them. My previous project had been to build a 10' x 4' 40k Citifight board using SWM Urban Street tiles and GW Sector Imperialus buildings and I felt that 40 square feet would satisfy any future itch. This freed up a lot of space and while going through my "stuff" I found the Mordheim rulebook and a load of figures.<br /><br />So I settled on my next project. Build a 6' x 4' Mordheim city board. I had a lot of Tabletop World buildings I could use but needed the right "base" on which to use them.<br /><br />The first thing I did was search the Google and Youtube for possible examples and found myself a great set of videos by Fredrick Lybeck of Lybbans Miniatures. He had built a city board that was exactly what I aspired to......so out I went and bought a new tool.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNuXh2B-7AeSmB-XgJUhhJ8h4rfcGfIHfo2ds8XxIr76TVJwdKoxz5wa-Imrson5L5QV_zFTiZxwXqsM6i6mUxss_CxvYJdp6UDMnw-NOPWI_r2NNwe0j2Hk_lBiVsWkO6NM8Ea4qVjbPm7-7Q0FUXHwLWNmlHFHY-4-qwzRANqM4tlIreNk-yZOZy/s800/creality-cr6-se-3d-printer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNuXh2B-7AeSmB-XgJUhhJ8h4rfcGfIHfo2ds8XxIr76TVJwdKoxz5wa-Imrson5L5QV_zFTiZxwXqsM6i6mUxss_CxvYJdp6UDMnw-NOPWI_r2NNwe0j2Hk_lBiVsWkO6NM8Ea4qVjbPm7-7Q0FUXHwLWNmlHFHY-4-qwzRANqM4tlIreNk-yZOZy/w400-h400/creality-cr6-se-3d-printer.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The Creality CR-6 SE. That year Adepticon was canceled, as it was last year. But now it's back and thankfully it looks like I'll be there.<br /><br />This year it is hosting the first US Golden Daemon in about eight years and I can't wait to see the entries. It is also bigger than before spread over two hotels linked by a shuttle. The event has attracted great support from vendors.<br /><br />So I'm looking forward to "nerding out" for five days. I have 8-9 hobby classes lined up and plenty of time to frequent the vendor hall. I'm looking forward to seeing the great army displays the tournaments attract.<br /><br />Can't wait! I have the two GW Ogre monsters but both are on scenic bases and both are far too large to use in KOW. So to that end I purchased a box of the CMON "A Song of Ice & Fire" War Mammoths. We agreed that, in retrospect, Lliam probably had stacked his right flank too heavily - especially with only one objective on that flank. This was compounded by the wood midtable on the flank. It inhabited both his visibility as he had to stop at the edge and then was put in a situation where charges were Hindered. All goes away with Caterpillar on the Horsemen.</span><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The other critical point was the move forward with the Lower Abyssals. They were sufficiently forward that I could multicharge thenm and remove in a single turn. This gave me superiority in the centre AND left my Rabble on the flank with two objectives unbothered (as Lliam had to redirect to shore up his forces).<br /><br />Good game. Nice to use a new army. Though I only had 12 drops, I had US of 27 which was important in "Pillage".<br /><br />I learnt that a Ogre Warlork only has two attacks which is sub-optimal when you need to cause a wound 😉<br /><br />I'm also continuing to struggle versus Flyers and haven't worked out a way to stop the winged Temptress with the Gnome Shield. Well, I think I know what to do....but I haven't done it yet.<br /><br />Next out for me will likely be Kingdoms of Men.<br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p></div>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-51648026819869475762022-01-23T14:48:00.000+13:002022-01-23T14:48:01.319+13:00Hobby - Flagellant Unit <p> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">As noted here a couple of weeks ago, I have no real active projects I am working on at the moment. In August last year I managed to book a hotel room at the Renaissance Schaumberg where it is being held and in December booked flights.<br /><br />Today the tickets for each of the events went on sale and I scooped up 7 out of the 8 painting classes I wanted. Not bad given most were sold out in 3-4 minutes.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZuCxTyZV8x8/Yd5V3tzms2I/AAAAAAAAVF4/Vas0AhQ-N9YKSxWZ0wpfHWyjRMzDQN8ZgCNcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="495" data-original-width="1001" height="316" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZuCxTyZV8x8/Yd5V3tzms2I/AAAAAAAAVF4/Vas0AhQ-N9YKSxWZ0wpfHWyjRMzDQN8ZgCNcBGAsYHQ/w640-h316/image.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I've managed to get three airbrushing classes plus two on painting faces....so pretty stoked.<br /><br />Obviously, the pachyderm in the room is our border situation. When the flights were booked (and as currently advised) they are slated to be open with MIQ self-isolation. However they have since delayed the opening of the border with Oz.<br /><br />Hopefully, I'll be able to venture out of our cave. </span><p></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-35529240506979544692022-01-06T08:17:00.001+13:002022-01-06T08:17:25.523+13:00Easy Army - Nothing As Queer As Folks (KOW)<p> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Over on the KOW Fanatics FB group there is currently a post complaining that all the latest content from the Clash of Kings 2022 update hasn't been uploaded to the Easy Army list builder.<br /><br />Some context. Easy Army is a list builder for Mantic Games maintained by a community volunteer. There is a free version available as well as a paid version ($2/month, $20/year) which gives extra features. One of those extra features is access to a version that is updated with new material sooner. Others include different save (and I believe share) options.<br /><br />So you can use use the list builder free of charge and, in conjunction, with the free digital version of the rules, play the game for nothing, list build etc.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C9dOr3H9LkU/YdXpa-d_I_I/AAAAAAAAVEk/Mz62X-9P2x0mvS0mexSJM5AntdYT9a6UwCNcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="344" data-original-width="500" height="275" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C9dOr3H9LkU/YdXpa-d_I_I/AAAAAAAAVEk/Mz62X-9P2x0mvS0mexSJM5AntdYT9a6UwCNcBGAsYHQ/w400-h275/image.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The debate at the moment is that this is not enough. There are sections of the community who believe that access to to all aspects of Easy Army should be free and that the volunteer who creates and maintains the service should not have any features behind a paywall.<br /><br />To me, this is a choice issue. If you want the features - and think they add value - then you pay for the service. If you don't think they are worth the cost, you don't. But to expect them for free....well, let's say I don't share your world view.<br /><br />In a game where you can easily drop $20 for a single figure, the annual cost for Easy Army seems a relative bargain. </span><p></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-21892692080037533502022-01-05T08:48:00.001+13:002022-01-05T08:48:18.513+13:00Hobby - Blank Slate<p> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">For the first time in living memory I have a clean hobby desk.<br /><br />By this I mean that I have no hobby projects backed up, staring at me accusingly. Sure, I have unpainted models......but a significant amount less than I had a year ago. Over the past year I've painted up accumulated armies - Death Guard, Yorkist WotR, Legio Vulpa - and added units to existing armies - Mongol Conquest, Patrician Roman, Norse Viking, Varangur, Ratkin, Dark Eldar - and that has seen the "pile of shame" dramatically diminish.<br /><br /></span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjTnD3in4vQzFWCc5mhyoP8cnAQ568Ca16U4avAjqm3qLcL-mayOG90YSv5ilLCXem2V9dfgko7t4dejjZ5UVftWP-MU812NslgO07xngXPR3keYhDGpE36-VfQf3zEeOzzgdX4ZzuLbWD0y3BmzDR2gVM6_VQvhTR6_mjc-H4Znmmwa5nRlOihqjMz=s1200" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1200" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjTnD3in4vQzFWCc5mhyoP8cnAQ568Ca16U4avAjqm3qLcL-mayOG90YSv5ilLCXem2V9dfgko7t4dejjZ5UVftWP-MU812NslgO07xngXPR3keYhDGpE36-VfQf3zEeOzzgdX4ZzuLbWD0y3BmzDR2gVM6_VQvhTR6_mjc-H4Znmmwa5nRlOihqjMz=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><b>Not a Hobby Desk.....but a Clean Desk Nonetheless</b></span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The other major contributor to the reduction was a change in my buying habits. In 2021 I purchased a single 40k model....the Dark Eldar Sslyth. And he was painted immediately. Other than that the only other purchases from Games Workshop were the odd paint and the two boxed sets, Cursed City and WarCry. In a "Come to Jesus" moment in September/October I released I was never likely to paint them and sold them off to the local market...remarkably both held their original purchase value.<br /><br />So what hobby in 2022?<br /><br />There are 30 Poxwalkers I could paint for my Death Guard. I have the figures and bases and these could be an option. However, I have really lost interest in the current direction of 40k - recent upcoming rules releases from GW don't fill me with confidence that it will change - and so there is no pressing need.<br /><br />For Xmas, I received 2L of resin for 3D prints from Jack. At present I'm perusing various creator libraries for a suitable project - there are some nice Crusader/Bretonnian/Medieval Knight figures available - that I could build into a KoW army if so inspired.<br /><br />But for the moment nothing is jumping out as must do.....strange times indeed!</span></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-77919478347763667352022-01-04T08:01:00.002+13:002022-01-04T08:01:38.994+13:00Hobby - KOW: Snow Foxes for Varangur<p> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The final addition I had to make to my Varangur to take them from v2 to v3 was to build a couple of units of Snow Foxes.<br /><br />I had some leftover resin Fenrisian Wolves and decided that they would fit the bill.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbrn_Ix5ymoCFkE_N4BERGEpoW36v3UczaOlh-8mUzDU0re72vgi52GuCJdv0mGgLqWYYA2Ve5yQWaXj4fdSDnatLtSIfgv3Xd4LWzW0CekzISOE2a6RZuoHfZrdnCh58PSIW14t6kwO5wParjhS8qDAPKxUMaP1bb2BffuSoC7dRN6wdrGaWS8k1r=s2962" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1861" data-original-width="2962" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbrn_Ix5ymoCFkE_N4BERGEpoW36v3UczaOlh-8mUzDU0re72vgi52GuCJdv0mGgLqWYYA2Ve5yQWaXj4fdSDnatLtSIfgv3Xd4LWzW0CekzISOE2a6RZuoHfZrdnCh58PSIW14t6kwO5wParjhS8qDAPKxUMaP1bb2BffuSoC7dRN6wdrGaWS8k1r=w400-h251" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Painting something up with such obvious white fur was quite stark (pun intended). Prior to that Maelstrom had supplied the world with WHFB and 40k from Mansfield. Free shipping and dodgy customs valuations (Gift GBP10) on every parcel meant that they were delivering the product, to Asia-Pacific in particular, at between 50-60% of local RRP. Most gamers couldn't ignore those types of savings.<br /><br />And then it stopped. And Maelstrom Games who had reinvested all their revenue into a gaming venue and the establishment of Mierce Miniatures, went broke within 6 months.<br /><br />In the last few months of their existence, they had increasingly desperate sales of stock to try and generate cashflow. During that time I bought up a lot of the Mierce range at between 50-75% off list price. Most of my The Herd is Mierce and the models have found their way into a variety of other armies.<br /><br />So when I was looking for a Lord on Frostfang for my Varangur I opened up my cardboard box marked Mierce and pulled out a Giant Werebear I had purchased at that time. It stands 4"+ tall but is compact enough to sit on a 50mm square base.<br /><br />A lovely model to paint and I'm quite pleased happy with how it has come up. I've tried to pick up the volumes that will catch the light.</span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhEzDSmO34nLoyqV45322U2deFMatPf93ovsw3bFd_CESaqw19vmgXulEKLmoCKoN24sWAO7asx0Xlows4gwEbirMynZvpF5ZK0Lz8ouyCDp5XzG_rKXNHUFdLKAFzvJPKlqQfaS45ztZe479sMxSj2cBkJzGWpqZfrdEg2dlGXzRrUstfj6_bqgfFG=s2907" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2823" data-original-width="2907" height="389" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhEzDSmO34nLoyqV45322U2deFMatPf93ovsw3bFd_CESaqw19vmgXulEKLmoCKoN24sWAO7asx0Xlows4gwEbirMynZvpF5ZK0Lz8ouyCDp5XzG_rKXNHUFdLKAFzvJPKlqQfaS45ztZe479sMxSj2cBkJzGWpqZfrdEg2dlGXzRrUstfj6_bqgfFG=w400-h389" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Varangur Lord, Bjorn Ironside</span></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjSBMJW17xaQGklfjB-PkjAZutZPTD5Dqn7RYyXxG0Yr-JkETL4LPjHreJ6M0LKFmnOkmrxvkQCPMoSImrIcU-Q-gK4KpLR_WSlBCoty5pcUKW-YlupK-Gt9dezb0R6Gu_KXGiJlLDN2hqvSQ96XYC6fnG20YG-k7Z5GV1sscUiqmwO8f-jHdBzrJpW=s1540" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1484" data-original-width="1540" height="385" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjSBMJW17xaQGklfjB-PkjAZutZPTD5Dqn7RYyXxG0Yr-JkETL4LPjHreJ6M0LKFmnOkmrxvkQCPMoSImrIcU-Q-gK4KpLR_WSlBCoty5pcUKW-YlupK-Gt9dezb0R6Gu_KXGiJlLDN2hqvSQ96XYC6fnG20YG-k7Z5GV1sscUiqmwO8f-jHdBzrJpW=w400-h385" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Base coats laid down</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhoc2BYCaLkuYgrtDRpQVO0vxB_nKiuZYXMPowEz7kBny-eTlFXmIHbcfBBh9Guk8yaX4RUM2ZGiIHxLDBnMSV0UTj9LMdCbUtAkO--ukdyH0h3cQMNUJ9RBOe0dxSd32Nk-3fV33zi6sy65nL5bxhlLm__gjHdvsZjG1oH8UZ4E9QUM_yPLEHdxNAg=s1469" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1422" data-original-width="1469" height="388" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhoc2BYCaLkuYgrtDRpQVO0vxB_nKiuZYXMPowEz7kBny-eTlFXmIHbcfBBh9Guk8yaX4RUM2ZGiIHxLDBnMSV0UTj9LMdCbUtAkO--ukdyH0h3cQMNUJ9RBOe0dxSd32Nk-3fV33zi6sy65nL5bxhlLm__gjHdvsZjG1oH8UZ4E9QUM_yPLEHdxNAg=w400-h388" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Purposely left all what will be shadowed areas very dark</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhTJlZgS6H4IEPYtBvqipdlx2TAME2fL1uAFSnJaOzjawLLQWqgsnum8WUpQmfBtpnDAaW3oNYF5sljaFbLK2iQTeJsXjXJErvGPAG2TDvHUUAAJY_chvO09FWB5swrjimVLq08XI5bEZ9bXcanT2brf2DgXB7yGH-0G4jhWoiRqtuRIxa2zFna75LL=s2708" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2708" data-original-width="2438" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhTJlZgS6H4IEPYtBvqipdlx2TAME2fL1uAFSnJaOzjawLLQWqgsnum8WUpQmfBtpnDAaW3oNYF5sljaFbLK2iQTeJsXjXJErvGPAG2TDvHUUAAJY_chvO09FWB5swrjimVLq08XI5bEZ9bXcanT2brf2DgXB7yGH-0G4jhWoiRqtuRIxa2zFna75LL=w576-h640" width="576" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Bjorn has suffered some battle damage. There is an option to swap the Lightning Bolt out for Bloodboil but again, at the headline level, that seems very situational (particularly when it can't be cast into Close Combat).</span><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z4H76S4Sets/Ycjl5ibAMYI/AAAAAAAAU-s/zuDq7mhM8VsH3ocYM9vs85yZscCt3LE8ACNcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="603" data-original-width="818" height="295" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z4H76S4Sets/Ycjl5ibAMYI/AAAAAAAAU-s/zuDq7mhM8VsH3ocYM9vs85yZscCt3LE8ACNcBGAsYHQ/w400-h295/image.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I am of the general view that you can never have enough Crushing Strength AND, more importantly, the ability to bestow CS where it is needed is an extremely attractive proposition to have in the toolbox. That got me looking at the possibility of adding Bane Chant (2) to my Magos.<br /><br />The key problem is that pesky (2). Each time it is cast there is a 25% chance of failure which if extended over five turns of a game, results in a likely 76%+ chance of at least one failure to cast. <br /><br />This got me looking at how to make the Magos more reliable - and there it was - The Conjuror's Staff. Having the ability to re-roll one failed attempt per turn changes the risk of a single failure to 12.5%, and increases the chance of being successful across five turns to above 50%. For a Varangur army a successful Bane Chant will likely correspond to an additional two wounds per combat, so tilting that balance can be significant.<br /><br />The pricing of the Staff is 10 points. Mathematically, I determine the added value to be approximately 0.25 wounds/round of combat (best case therefore 1.25-1.50 wounds). I expect the real value is the confidence you would get when contemplating whether to commit or not.<br /><br />For me, it looks like something I will give a try - the extra 10 points seem worth it to maximise the initial investment.</span><p></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-57468939139673663092021-12-20T13:02:00.004+13:002021-12-21T19:13:23.413+13:00KOW - Battle Report: Ratkin vs. Forces of Nature III (Up Close & Personal)<p> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Another chance for a game on Saturday and again it is against Forces of Nature. We are still easing back into the game and so are still playing "Kill".<br /><br />Carson made small changes to his list swapping out Air Elementals for Scorchwings. I was keen to look at the damage dealing capacity of my Ratkin when faced with a wall of De 5/6. Again very hardfought.<br /><br /><u style="font-weight: bold;">Wrap Up</u><br /><br />I was very happy at how well the Ratkin dealt with a frontal assault from the FoN heavy hitters however it raised issues re my list.<br /><br />At present I am using the Daemonspawn like a Nimble MRF. Not sure that is his best role. He clearly is a bit of a crutch unit and I am hopeful over time I can drop him and spend the 345 points more widely. I'd really like to get another Brood Mother into the list and have more chaff units. Enjoyed having 65 point throwaways!!!<br /><br />The other thing that I suspect I need to do is to stop playing "Kill" and start playing other scenarios. That may then help me focus my thinking around what direction to take the list.<br /><br />Thanks again Carson, and next up is Forces from the Abyss.</span></div></div><br />Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2342928539214422457.post-85493605565366942602021-12-15T11:40:00.002+13:002021-12-15T11:40:18.770+13:00KOW - Can Ratkin "Horde" With The Best Of Them?<p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">One of</span> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">greatest discoveries I made when I first played Kings of War, and in particular the v2 Uncharted Empires Ratkin list, was how much better the rats played as a horde army compared to my experiences in WHFB.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I found that the list really captured my perception of what a horde of rats would be like.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PKfTpl5clHI/YbkPGzrTckI/AAAAAAAAU3k/P8JPkthzqH0A48xjVV-MyzGnp56982YaQCNcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="558" data-original-width="440" height="400" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PKfTpl5clHI/YbkPGzrTckI/AAAAAAAAU3k/P8JPkthzqH0A48xjVV-MyzGnp56982YaQCNcBGAsYHQ/w315-h400/image.png" width="315" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><b><i>"Die-Die"</i></b></span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Coming back to the game after a break, I have been trying to consume as much material as possible to give myself a solid grounding in rules and potential tactics. One series of articles I've read was the series by Nick Williams on his adventures with Scarecrows (you can read the first article <a href="https://daedle.net/2020/12/26/year-in-review-the-scarecrow-gathering/" target="_blank">here</a>). The premise here was whether you could overwhelm your opponent by sheer weight of bodies. I really enjoyed the series and was wondering whether it was transferable to Ratkin.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">When I look at the "Scarecrow" solution, the base stats are:<br /><br />Horde - 21 Nerve - 130 points - De 3+ <br /><br />Legion - 27 Nerve - 190 points - De 3+<br /><br />The most obvious candidate are the Wretches:<br /><br />Horde - 21 Nerve -115 points - De 2+<br /><br />Legion - 27 Nerve - 170 points - De 2+<br /><br />At a headline level this looks really promising. Cheaper by 15/20 points, worse De and lacking Stealthy.....maybe something I can work with. Perhaps the biggest downside is that, unlike Scarecrows, Wretches can be Wavered.<br /><br />However, further investigation kills the concept DEAD. Unlike their Scarecrow friends, the units of Wretches are Irregular and must be unlocked. You can have some but nothing like the weight of Scarecrow units that can be brought to bear.<br /><br />The next option is to look at Warriors. Their stats read:<br /><br />Regiment - 14 Nerve - 85 points - De 4+<br /><br />Horde - 21 Nerve - 145 points - De 4+<br /><br />So in this instance, I dismissed Regiments and focused on Hordes. More expensive (15 points), susceptible to Wavered and no Stealthy is offset by higher De value. You also get to give them Rallying.<br /><br />Perhaps this could work?<br /><br />Checking through the rest of the stats, the rats are faster(ish). However, besides existing, these units need to do something....even if slowly. Unfortunately for Ratkin, the Warriors have 5 less attacks than the Scarecrows (both hit on 5s).<br /><br /><u style="font-weight: bold;">Wrap Up</u><br /><br />I think that if you are looking for pure, pure Horde then a Scarecrow horde just does it better than what can be achieved by the Rats. Cheaper and better on the grind with no Wavered risk.<br /><br />However, reading through Nick's full series, I believe he reaches a point where he suggests that rather than "full" horde, a nuanced "support" horde may yield better long term results. This may be the case but I do believe there is a certain value in the despair of your opponent when faced by so many resilient units (by despair, I mean more potential for indecision).<br /><br />Certainly believe that he identified a "sweet spot" unit that in retrospect may be either a bit underpriced or potentially a candidate for "Irregular".<br /><br />So can Ratkin "horde"? Of course they can. You can definitely create an extended frontage of Nerve 20+ which will occupy space. What it is lacking is damage-dealing potential. Therefore the "support" needs to be carefully thought through. The ideal tactics being to pin the enemy with the Horde and have dangerous and maneuverable units that can hit the flanks. Simple but the proof is in the execution 😉 <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span><br /></p><p><br /></p>Pete Dunnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14352990006052067650noreply@blogger.com0
