Through one of NZ's gaming clubs I was able to take advantage of an offer from a retailer looking to dispose of End Times books.
So I picked up sealed copies of four of the End Times books - three in soft cover and Archaon in hardback. This was fortuitous as they had no copies of Thanquol which was the only hardback I had.
Thanks to the club and retailer involved, I now have a complete set.
Listening to the Counter Charge Podcast interview with Alessio, one of the things that got me really excited about KoW was his current project.
Alessio indicated that he is currently working on a Historical expansion for the ruleset to allow you to play games with historical armies pre the widespread prevalence of black powder weapons. This is generally taken to be the period prior to 1500AD (yes gunpowder was used prior to this but it was not a dominating force).
As the owner of numerous historical armies this is exciting news. The ability to play either fantasy or historical with the same game system is very attractive to me.
I am currently reading through a series of books on the Wars of the Roses - a particularly favoured conflict of mine - and having refought 6-8 of the pivotal battles in 15mm DBM about fifteen years ago, I'd love the opportunity to do it again with 28mm figures.
As an aside I am reading about the Battle of Towton which is still the largest land battle ever on British soil. Around 70,000 men fought in dreadful weather conditions with the aftermath representing a total bloodbath as one side tried to flee through a swamp.
From the podcast it appears the expansion will be seen in 2016.
I spent an "exciting" evening working on my new Kings of War trays. Once the glue had set I used the airbrush to give them two coats of primer.
From there they had a brush topcoat of Chaos Black.
I'm tossing up whether to gloss varnish them (or perhaps) Satin and still considering whether to line them with steel paper.
My KoW trays arrived from Sarissa today. That was 8 days from when I ordered them - so thumbs up for customer services.
Tonight I glued the lips to the base ready for painting. I'm unsure yet whether I'll magnetise them as I want them to be able to be easily useable by a multitude of armies as I get into the game
My intention is to paint them black rather than texture them. A couple of reasons for this. One, they can then be used by any army regardless of my basing style and two, it makes it clear that the tray is not part of the unit i.e. Measure to the model base rather than the tray.
One thing I am completely unable to do is play a game without the appropriate tokens.
I really dislike the tokens Mantic produced as part of their Kickstarter so I did a quick search of the net and settled on this:
It is a set of acrylic tokens made by Ironheart Artisans in the US. The set includes the requisite wound counters plus objective markers and tokens for "Disordered" and "Wavering" (I suspect my brave rats will never use any of these).
I also was told of a second set from a UK manufacturer Counter Attack Bases which you can find on via a quick search on the Goggle.
