My "Variant" Skaven Army

I've got a game against Lizards today. This will have the "Certainty" Slaan in it without a doubt.

I'm looking to try out a new list that drops a few of the staples I've used over the past year and looks to add some ranged firepower.

Here's the list:

Seer - Talisman of Preservation, Earthing Rod, Skalm

BSB - Armour of Destiny, Shield

Engineer - Lvl 1, Dispel Scroll

Engineer - Lvl 1, Doomrocket, Condensor

Engineer - Lvl 1, Feedback Scroll

Engineer - Obsidian Amulet, Ironcurse Icon

24 Stormvermin - Full Command, Storm Banner, Doomflayer

26 Clanrats - Full Command, Ratling Gun

20 Clanrats - Full command, Poisoned Wind Mortar

40 Slaves - Muso

40 Slaves - Muso

36 Slaves - Muso

6 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings

6 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings

Hell Pit Abomination

Warp Lightning Cannon

Ratapult

So a bigger Core % than I have been running and a much stronger Magic Defense - I expect to see a lot of Death over the coming months.

I'll let you know how I went this evening.

  1. The FAQ ruling certainly made the base death spell a lot better, but do you think there will really be a proliferation of Death users, or just a short term trend?

The best platforms I see for using it are HE princes with Radient Gem, chaos sorcerers and maybe tzeentch greater daemons. Everyone else has fairly poor Ld, so it can't really be relied on. Picking out engineers is one thing, trying to take down a grey seer with 4+ ward is another.

Maybe I'm just biased because I don't think much of the lore.

No furnace Pete? What's the world coming to?

Also, I'm guessing you're trying out the various weapons teams to see what works?

  2. Dave,

The list has changed already :-)

I'll post the new new list tonight once I get Army Builder in front of me.

Yep...no Furnace. Basically just want to try some different things. I think I know the Furnace pretty much inside out. Know what it can and can't beat. Know what scares me, what doesn't.

I'm totally not convinced by Weapons Teams. Everybody swears by PWM. To me they are more of the same. I'm going to try Ratling Guns for awhile because they fulfil a role in my army that I can't otherwise meet. I suspect they will remain difficult to use.

Let's just say Death Magic is currently very popular at Bengal St....and I expect at Warlords. I do think that it will be super popular. It's made me look at different possibilities.

Be very surprised if it isn't integral to anti-Skaven at ETC

    Pete

  3. I certainly understand trying something new. I'm going to do everything I can to make daemonettes work (and likely give up and go back to bloodletters).

I'm not convinced on weapons teams either. Too easy to kill, too difficult and risky to use. PWM are the easiest to use, so that's why they get recommended, but they are just adding to what the rest of the list does. I don't like ratling guns much either, since they now have to roll to hit and have average BS. Warpfire throwers are decent and I think compare favourably with ratlings (they're just far riskier). The issues you have with ogres is countered by causing d3 wounds. Locking a unit down with slaves and then shooting across the unit with warpfire thrower seems like a decent use to me. But like you said, not exactly user friendly.

Right then, looks like I'll have to go full circle and come back to have a look at Death again. I'm quite liking shadow at the moment though.
