Guardcon Comp Restrictions

The Players Pack for Guardcon is up on the Cityguard Forum and included are the comp restrictions. Again it is a Hard Cap system (hooray) with what look like reasonably light restrictions for most armies.

I have cut and paste the restrictions (below) for those that don’t venture north of the wall into the wastes that are Auckland.

The restrictions are pretty light for most armies. I'm personally not convinced by the restrictions on the CoC for some armies. I think that you could restrict it to model on foot only - and that would get rid of the Pegasus/Disk builds which seem to being targetted.

My only concern on the pack is the restriction on Big Magic. I think that giving characters a Look Out Sir encourages Death Star builds. The NZ scene has not cottoned on to adding MR3 to their death stars yet but when they do and it is coupled with a LOS against big spells it will make them almost impervious to all but other death stars.

General Restrictions:

• 2400pt: No special or named characters allowed.

• Max of 12 power dice or dispel dice may be used, stored or otherwise rolled by each player in each magic phase. The basic premise is that if it looks like a power dice and acts like a power dice it counts as power dice, even if it is called something else. (eg: Mushroom dice etc.)

• Max of +2 power dice or dispel dice may be generated, recovered from storage or otherwise created by each player in each magic phase. Dice generated from channel attempts or one use items are exempt from this restriction. (Scrolls count as 1 DD).

• You may have units/abilities that actually would generate more than 2 extra dice, but any excess dice are lost.

• Maximum unit size 40 and 500points.

• Maximum of three units per army with the “fly” rule.

• An army may have up to 4 war machines and template weapons. Warmachines that use a template count as a single choice in this regard. All template weapons (from magic items, abilities, etc.) count towards this limit, except for spells.

• Characters affected by the following spells that would instantly remove it from the table only take one wound if it would normally benefit from a look out sir roll from being part of a unit. The Dreaded 13th, Infernal Gateway and Final Transmutation spells. This does not apply if you are a lone character outside of a unit.

Banned Items:

• The magic item “Fozzrik’s Folding Fortress” may not be taken.

Note: The TO reserves the right to Veto lists deemed to be too offensive.

• Salamanders 0 – 2 models per army.

  1. Whats up with banning Crown of Command and BoDiscipline on High Elves?

  2. Main concern is the unnecessary hatred of my cute rat-gadgets, it's just a slap in the face that I can't help but take personally.

  3. These restrictions are aweful IMO.VC,HE,WOC and DE all get the shaft, while Skaven,Lizards, and Ogres get off very lightly.I think alittle more thought could have been put into the 500ptsmax unit size too(dreading the thought of a 500pt Gutstar) Maybe keeping some armies like ogres at the 450pt max and letting others like HE have 500.
Totally agree with you about the magic restrictions on the big spells and with the 500pt max unit ,theres going to be shed loads of deathsars and pt denial units.

Do you happen to know what the Win/Loss table looks like?

I will be very interested in seeing the lists and the final results, because i think i can pick which armies will be in the top 5.

  4. Ahh, NZ still banning all SCs for some reason... Just ban the ones that are too good. Noone takes the others anyway, except for a bit of fun!

"Characters affected by the following spells that would instantly remove it from the table only take one wound if it would normally benefit from a look out sir roll from being part of a unit. The Dreaded 13th, Infernal Gateway and Final Transmutation spells."

I don't get it? Dwellers is way better at killing off characters than Final Transmutation but not comped at all! Oh wait, everyone in Auckland is running Wood Elves atm... I get it ;)

Agree with above, Ogres without BoDisc/CoC might actually encourage the use of Tyrants, or at least something other than the bore-fest that is Ogre lists at the moment.

I'm not sure where else you can go with Skaven without limiting Slaves in some way, so I won't comment on them further.

Look forward to the Party Slaan all coming out for some drinks!

Glad they got rid of Brett restrictions. 0-1 Treb is basically banning Trebs.

  5. I'm going to be different for a change and actually agree with you Pete!

I am thankful for the LOS vs 13th though!

  8. I too am pretty surprised at the combo of a 500pt unit limit AND no nerfing of dwellers..

Not quite sure why ethereals are 0-2.. Bit tough, restricting the knight bus/asf vamp spam and screams is where VC need to be hit. Just bring some magic weapons/missiles.

And HE have been hit triply hard. No BoH, restricting the generation of magic dice AND restricting combat builds that don't involve White Lions. Ok, I see where they're pushing there..

Everything else seems standard. I can see lots of death stars showing up, and skink clouds with dwellers spamming slaans countering them into oblivion.

Should be an interesting one.. Whoever can figure out how to make a death star beat msu or vice versa should take it.

  9. Dwellers will be nurfed don't worry it was missed in the initial sweep because of the editing reasons.

Ogres must be OP Pete, Gutstars are hated world wide (one comment is statistical proof). Good point on the party Slann and have made notes to veto and lizard parties (this is at Mal, not really ;) ). I play High elves who cares about CoC, have never taken it and it maybe due to a general sweep that they got docked.

GuardCon is the tournament Auckland City Guard holds to encourage all levels of players to a tournament. we like to make sure that armies are suitably tamer than conventional tournaments. Will be great to see you guys all there.

    1. Cheers Phil, I was wondering about Dwellers :P

As for Ogres, I don't think they're OP (at least I've only lost to them once in 4 games) just there's pretty much no list variation and its so damn boring. I'd just like to see them have to make some decisions about what to take...

    2. That's right Kenny....you come back for the UK and think you can tell everyone how to play, what they can take etc.

Well we do things different around here. It's not your role to make sure that your opponent's list is interesting, nor is it my role to entertain you.

Take a number and wait in line!

  10. Haha, Ok, I won't tell you what to play, I'll just try my hardest to ruin the list for you. Deal?
