Let's Talk About Dryads

So here are the headline Stats:
  • WS4 S3 T4 A2 I6 6++
  • Ranked
  • Hatred
This for 11 points. So what do we think of them?

Well they are generally going first and have re-rolls to hit. However I wonder how much damage they will do. Let's look at something like Stormvermin as a target, sure they can hurt them.

However with any sort of armour and a Parry the Dryads quickly run into trouble. No command options they soon struggle for CR.

I'm struggling to see what role they will fill. They have no chance versus armour and at 11 points are too expensive for diverters.

What am I missing?

Sure they can be buffed but so can archers (who deliver wounds from distance). I think I'd be spending my Core on Archers.

  1. I think i now have 30 useless models and roughly 300 extra points to spend on other better core units.

Really i am fine with the whole ranked no command thing, thats actually good as they can get rank bonuses for combat rez, but going down to S3 is the big issue for me. They now no longer can do the damage i need them to do and so they are useless to me

  2. I'm taking it as yet another example of GW game designers not really knowing their own game that well. 11 points for all that is just not worth it, even the most basic level of mathshammer would have shown that.

I think this is where much of the nerd-rage comes from. Warhammer is a good game, but it could be a great one if blindingly obvious mistakes like this were picked up prior to publication. It says to me that their QC systems are non-existant.

  3. Well every Wood Elf player out there owned like 30 of them right? Seems like GW logic to nerf them so you have to buy new models for your army.

They do this all the time. Just look at the 11pt Khorne Marauders or poor old Bloodletters.

  4. Do they not also have Frenzy? I've seen Q&As that say hatred, frenzy or both. That might slightly change the dynamic, 25 (reroll to hit) attacks from 5x2ranks (first turn)

  5. Also a Branch Wraith is L1 Beasts (or life) for 75 points. Sneak a Wyssans on them and they get a lot better. Of course it's unreliable that your opponent will let you.

  6. Nope, no frenzy, instead hatred and fear:

  7. no way round it they are garbage... such a shame.. S3 ranked, no musician... if you want a ranked block rangers are S5 and eternal guard are stubborn for the same points plus you can have command/magic banner

  8. Its a bit early to talk about internal balance but while they seem to be getting condemned across the internet I think their stats are not too bad for the points.

Roughly speaking in terms of damage output and survivability you are looking at a dark elf corsair and most people reckon corsairs are okay. ASF with elven initiative is typically slightly better than hatred but not always.

The real issue is the value you place on immune to psychology and fear. It is difficult to mathhammer these abilities (especially given elven leadership values) but everyone fails tests sometimes and such turns games. These are therefore not worthless abilities.

It will be interesting to see if the lack of command has that much of an effect.

It could turn out that eternal guard are just much better but if so it will mean eternal guard are a very good unit.

  11. Losing Skirmishers was a pretty big blow. They could of seen some niche role as a chaff unit or something similar but losing their once impressive stat line and skirmishing rule will likely see them relegated to dust collecting duty.
