A New Challenge and A Change of Direction

Charlie and I was talking during the week about getting a new spark into our wargaming. For me Skaven and Ogres don't do it anymore and for him he's found he's been going through a plethora of armies - Orks, Necrons, Space Wolves - and nothing really seems to capture his soul.

Tossing around ideas we realised that neither of us had ever built or played with probably the key Warhammer army - Dwarfs. And so after reading through the army book we came up with a challenge - to each build a Dwarf army to play at Call to Arms.

To help us on our path to achieve our goal we have decided that Fields of Blood will have a change in direction. Instead of being a general warhammer/40k blog it will dedicate itself to exploring the nuances and techniques of building and playing a Dwarf army.

Expect lots of painting advice on painting Dwarfs from Charlie and I'll be trying to get my head around the subtleties of playing the little men.

There will be grumbling!

  1. Sweet Serendipity, I woke up this morning and had this urge to sell my Dwarves and play Skaven. Or 40K, with it's realistic depiction of futuristic combat ("In the far future we will hit stuff with SWORDS!").

So, are you up for an army swap? I have a Flame Cannon (like a Warpfire Thrower but twice the price and worse). Tell you what, as your collection is bigger, I'll throw in my High Elves as well.

  3. No Tane.

Part of the challenge is working out the nuances of Dwarf tactical doctrine for ourselves. Trying to find the balance in an army with all the answers.

And I now Charlie is excited about pushing himself to painting new shades of ginger given his work with the Space Wolves. I expect two (if not three) units of Slayers - I mean who wouldn't be excited painting rampant, semi-naked rangas?

    1. You sure you don't want the High Elves as well? You told me you loved their background and model range.

I'd like a change too. I think Dwarves are too powerful, and as you say, have all the answers. I think you'll enjoy getting into their subtleties though; "Shall I wheel the Hammerers 2" to the left, or back up 1", "Shall I cannon the Abomb or cannon the Furnace" and "Do I castle to the left or to the right?". You'll revel in it, I swear.

    2. Oh Tane you are hilarious! Don't forget he needs to maintain discipline to NOT make charges!

  4. It's going to be difficult painting a unit that gives me a raging erection whenever I work on it, but regardless I look forward to working on the slayers.

    1. If you want to paint slayers, you could do worse than these. I hope the nipple piercings arent' too much for you though.

  7. So now that we're beyond it, quite obviously Peter and I could not even truly fathom being this dull, it is business as usual, SHIZAM!
