More Chaos (sorry Random) Codex Leaks

Taken from UK Gamer Neil Kerr's blog:

Release date - 1st September and it is a hard back like the 8e WFB Army Books.

There is an Eye of the Gods esque table (Warriors of Chaos players will know what I am talking about) that you get to roll on whenever a character kills another character in a challenge, or a Walker or Monstrous Creature. There is a multitude of gifts (and curses) that your Characters can acquire which range from +1 Save, +1 Toughness, or becoming either a Spawn or a Daemon Prince!!!

Chaos Cultists are definitely in, as is the 'Dragon' - think Necron Night Scythe with the main chassis been replaced by a massive mechanical dragon head with segmented wings sweeping forward and around from it.

On top of those there are also:
  • Dark Apostles - evil Chaplains basically
  • Warsmiths - evil Techmarine that can curse vehicles and degrade terrain.
  • A new Daemon Engine - half way between a Dreadnought and a Defiler.
  • Speaking of Defilers as they are Daemons they have a 5+ Inv save.
  • 'Cult' units are all Elites and are unlocked to Troops by appropriate HQ choices, but there are no Cult Terminators which makes me sad.
  • Obliterators are exclusively for shooting - so no powerfists. BUT there is a new unit which is basically a close combat Obliterator.
  • There are 2 types of Raptors now; regular CSM with Jump Packs, and then some kind of Possessed Daemonic Raptors that all come with Lightning Claws!
  • Possessed are meant to be amazing, and take a lot of benefits from the Eye of the Gods esque table.
  • There are NO Daemons in the Codex because that is what Allies are for.

Somewhere deep inside I can feel a rant building.....Codex: Random Space Marines

Only two six weeks to go - one five really, given White Dwarf leaks.

EDIT: I had assumed Codex: Random Assorted Marines was out next month but if it is September what is August? Perhaps we'll get Army Book: Warriors of Chaos earlier than expected. Also I thought September was the Starter Set...confused?

  1. I honestly don't - it is all very Realm of Chaos and The Lost and the Damned, which I like and how it was described to me.

It is going to be interesting as I have received a lot of hate emails about my post... some gamers I ask you... will just wait 2 weeks and see if I am vindicated or if my mate was stringing me along (which would be the first time ever when it comes to 40K rumours).

    1. Yep, Neil it will be different things to different people.

My introduction to CSM in 40k was through the 3rd Edition Codex and the White Dwarf IA articles.....so CSM means Traitor Legions to me.

What I can't understand is given that there was a large part of the CSM fan base that shared my inclination towards the Traitor Legions, is why doesn't GW just invest an extra page in the Codex outlining rules for them - they can even say they are optional or not for tournament play.

As for hate (e)mail....that is pathetic.

Thanks to you from FOB for taking the trouble and time to paste them.

  2. I think the whole thing is awesome. Cultists are sweet. I only can't wait, I can resurrect my Lost and the Damned army.

  3. I'm confused, isn't 1st September slightly more than 2 weeks away, or am I missing something?

    1. No, you're not. I don't recognise August as a valid month.....so erased it

  4. Other than the inability to take Cult Terminators I don't see how these rumours will make it impossible to run specific Legion based lists. What else were you expecting?

Personally I like the addition of Cultists as it gives you much more variation in lists. Other stuff like the addition of a flier shouldn't exactly be a surprise, although I'm slightly sceptical of the no Daemons suggestion (I could believe only generic Daemons are in though).

    1. I think everyone just wants a bit more character back in the book, Cultists are a start but Cult Termies are such a simple way to start introducing it. As Pete says, it could be done in half a page!

Chaos, out of all 40k armies, has by far and away the most potential for a huge variety of characterful armies and themes, but GW seems determined to steer clear of letting it happen. Guess they reckon allies will be the way forward if you want interesting theme lists to happen.

    2. The two lists that I most identify with:

Emperor's Children - Characters with EC upgrades (had but now only have Lucius)Noise Marines (have), Noise Bikers (never had), Noise Terminators (had but lost), Noise Havoks (had but lost), Sonic Dreads (as per FW), Sonic Predators (never had), Slaanesh Daemons (6th Ed has returned).

Death Guard - Plague Marines (have), Plague Terminators (had but lost), Characters with Nurgle Characteristics (had but gone), Plaguebearers (back with Allies)

So EC are the most affected, I could live with Plague Termies for DG.

A lot will depend on how the marks work but EC need weaponry change.

  5. I had something of value to add (certainly more value than: "shut up Peter, Gav Thorpe is a sexy and courageous man") - but got very distracted by the realization that Neil Kerr reads this blog!

  6. Your refusal to acknowledge August is intriguing.

  7. Statistically speaking, 100% of all winners are born during the month of August.
