Characters and Combat Reform

Umpiring events you are always learning.

I have always seen it played that in Combat you could not move a character out of contact with another character. However on the weekend, study of the Rulebook showed that was not the case.

At the end of Combat - and assuming not fighting enemy on two facings - either party can Combat Reform. As long as models are not taken out of combat, there is no restriction on moving around in the fighting rank.

So if your Mage is fighting a Chaos Lord you can move the model as long as it remains fighting. This can get quite interesting.

The order in which Combat Reforms is decided is by "roll-off". If you win the roll-off and go second then conceivably you can move the Mage to a safer position.

All covered under "Combat Reform".

I had always thought you Mage was stuck if a hitty character got into base to base with him - he is, but only for the first round of combat. If he survives, he can slip away - albeit to be snotted by rank and file or another character.

Always learning.

  2. Technically, to move a character within a unit, one first has to REMOVE it from the original position, thus potentially counting as removing from combat...

    1. Not sure how successful you'd be with that interpretation.

    2. the moment the opponent picks up the mini to move it over, I will yell: "cannot take it out of combat", the opponent gets embarrassed and puts it back down... sportsmanship score goes down by 50%... Does that answer your concern re the the method?

    1. Yep, read it Herman. Still seems kosher to me that you can move Character within front rank as long as you don't reduce the number of models fighting and he isn't moved out of btb.

What do others think? Yay or nay?

  4. Page 55, on combat reform.
Combat reform "cannot be used to get a model out of base contact with the enemy if it was in contact before the reform was made. The model CAN BE IN BASE CONTACT WITH A DIFFERENT ENEMY at the end of the reform if you wish."

It's very clear, you can't move a model that was in b2b so that it no longer is. But you can move a model so that it is b2b with a different model/unit.

  5. Seems odd and I admit I've always played it the other way. Rules are rules though and good to note.

Guess I would think of it as a roll off to see if the character can scurry away for a turn and lose themselves in the general melee. Still gives chance for rank and file to beat up the poor wizard... don't see it changing much.

    1. Think that would resolve it. I think most of us have always believed that you're locked into combat once you've engaged b2b, and you cannot scurry away it it is resolved one way or another. Page 55 is not clear what "enemy: is- the unit or the character. If it is not a challenge it appear that you could scurry away. As there is no FAQ on this one, rolling may be the way forward. Interesting...
