When Was The Last Time You Saw A Giant

Driving to work this morning I was trying to remember the last time that I saw a Giant across the table from me.

It must be over two years ago. I honestly can't remember the last person I saw using one.

The GW pic gives a solid guide to why we don't see them - lack of defence in a world where 6s always wound. And that's before we start with Poison.

So when did you last play/use one?

  1. I used one at Homecon 2013, and it was beyond awful.

  2. I fought against one in a club game in 2012, I killed it with spider riders.....

    2. it was one of the first games I'd played, I had taken a few wounds off so was all like well I'll see what a flank charge with spider riders can do and lo and behold a few 6s come up. This was back when I only used goblins.....

  3. Talk to Henry! He owns 3 of them. I actually used one in two warm up games for Gaurdcon in a Swedish ogre list before switching and taking HE’s. They are actually cheaper than a single sabretusk under that comp so probably tells you something! It was fun to use one but pretty terrible. I had one opportunity to eat a dwarf lord and forced a pop test on some fiends before ultimately dying both times!

  4. Yep Henry Poor NZ's first hobby hero has used two in a tournament before. Awesome.

  5. Homecon 2013 for me too. Prior to that it was Skitterleap 2009. I used to take them quite a lot as they are great fun and unpredictable.
I haven't used O&G very much in 8th edition partly due to time constraints but also the animosity rules IMO are not as much fun as before. They work against the army whereas before they gave opportunities as well.

  6. i ran a chaos one about a month ago at axemaster. dont tell him, but he was a soft choice for scgt. died 4/6 games, but never without doing something useful first,
definately not all bad. the game where he didnt help kill his pts worth he held up a gutstar with a yell and bawl. plus it helped shift focus away from him by having plenty of other things in the list to worry more about

  7. Best luck ive had with my giants is running two of them, a lvl4 shaman on wyvern (black tooth) and Grom. Plenty of things to shoot rather than the crapy giants. but two is more than twice as good. key is to offer plenty of targets.
giants are rad, get off your (everyones) high horse and stop pretending youre good at warhammer. just enjoy it for what it is!

  8. Last time I run a Giant was when i still owned an Orc and Goblin army around the middle of 7th edition. i.e. before i found i wondrous goodness that is Dwarfs and High Elves.

I used to regularly run a single giant. He most memorable moment was charging a lance of knights, then jumping up and down on them, killing the entire unit in one go.

  9. I stopped using them when 8th Ed came along. I own 3, a converted old school one, with a big paunch (affectionately known as Bellicosus) He was killer before the rules changed. I also have a 3-headed monstrosity chaos giant, and a regular one per your picture. No longer good value for money either as model or as points. Not even fun in a fluffy list any more. Lost the danger element. Much like spawn. When last did you see a chaos list featuring either ? They were well and truly nerfed by 8th ed, and having no save makes them soft as feather down.

    1. Best result I evey had was Bellicosus falling on a unit of greatswords, and only 1 survived.

    2. You could use the old school one as a bonegrinder giant for Inepticon. They are pretty awesome and have the same cool rules. Being s8, w10, t7 and being able to thunderstomp monsters makes it pretty useful. Ain't no spider riders going to stomp that. The rules are in the Storm of Magic.

  10. I had a game against Jeff once when I thought he was using a giant, then I eventually realised it was just him standing on the table for a better look. It was a ruse to stop me shooting at the other units for sure.

And of course his wargaming presence is colossal too, which makes it even more distracting.
