Never Let the Squigs Off the Leash in a Building

James and I had a game on Saturday afternoon - my Two Orcs & Many Goblins versus his Book of Hoeth High Elves. We played "Watchtower" and James was the incumbent.

At the outset I need to say that my 5 Night Goblin units that needed to make Animosity checks never made one check all afternoon. Both of us forgot I had to roll them. My fault [Cheater] - and I am making a big sign to remind me that I need to make them.

The most stunning part of this game was when my Squig Herd destroyed a unit of High Elf archers to take the Tower. In response James charged the Tower with a horde of White Lions that I had cast "Gork Will Fix It" on. When we chose the assault party - I selected the nine remaining NG Herders and a Squig. James killed the Herders and the Squig but it gave me 20 WS4 Str 5 attacks back. I rolled up - 16/20 hits and killed 14 of the White Lions, winning the combat.

However with the Herders now gone the Squigs exploded doing D6 Str 6 hits to all units within 11". This cleaned out a lot of my now loose Fanatics plus a significant number of additional elves!

  1. You might have to be a bit more careful with that tactic Pete. The rulebook says that squigs go wild at any time as soon as there are no herders. They immediately go wild.
It might be open to debate being mid-combat but it doesn't read that way.
Easily solved if you want to keep your herd alive by keeping one herder back.

  2. No...it's as soon as they flee or the beginning of their next movement phase. They didn't flee in this case

  3. Are you sure Pete? In the O&G book it states they go wild if it flees, or if any time there are only squigs left alive? I couldn't find anything in the FAQ either.

  4. Tom has just confirmed what you guys said....so I'm an even bigger Cheater....as Neil says keep one Herder back

  5. Sam, was an 11-9 Loss for me. Sniped the characters, bar the level 4 (IF Doom and Darknesas + Spirit Leech skills ;-)) ftw, but when the Squigs went mental and neutered the Lion Horde, I couldn't get the second squig herd out of the building, which tipped it Pete's way after the Doom Divers took their toll.

Still not sure Book of Hoeth is as broken as people say it is. Just the makes magic phase reliable is all... Other magic item combos are equally (or more) viable imo.

Pete, Didn't we both read the Squig Explosion rule straight out of the Army Book? or was it the Army Builder summary we read?

  6. I remember reading it out to you....maybe you are right and it was from AB Army list. I'll check tonight.

  7. I don't think you can combo spirit leech and Doom and Darkness, as Spirit leech uses the Unmodified Ld value.

  9. Haha, I did too! Made sure never to use Banner of Discipline for it but took D&D... Theres your dead general back :-) The Spider got eaten by fimirs anyway and the BSB got his head splated regardless but thats a bit of a difference.

Turns out we're both filthy cheaters!

  10. And you were right... Army Builder says at the start of your next turn not immediately - pretty impt error.

Who cares if we're cheaters, if we have fun. The rules are just guidelines you know
